Henoch-Schonlein Purpura
Henoch-Schönlein purpura ("hen-awk shern-line purr-purr-ah") causes
inflammation of the blood vessels in your skin. This inflammation is called vasculitis. It can also affect blood vessels in
the bowel and kidneys. When the blood vessels in your skin get inflamed, they can bleed, causing a rash that is called purpura.
The intestines and the kidneys may also bleed.
Signs and Symptoms:
- purple spots on the skin (purpura), usually over the buttocks, lower
legs, and elbows
- hives or angioedema
- joint pains
- abdominal pain
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- bloody stools
- painful menstruation
